Nottingham EM-Con (Comicon) 2015

Date: 15th March 2015
Location: CapitalFM Arena - Nottingham

Guest of Honour (For us) - Nichelle Nichols (Uhura from Star Trek Original Series)

Nichelle, whilst aging gracefully, still bore a strong resemblance to Uhura with her well defined bone structure. Her hair was shock white, which looked pretty cool. I kinda regret not getting a photo with her, but ah well - there's always another Con around the corner, I guess.

Size-wise, it felt quite a bit smaller than last year's Sheffield Comicon, and there seemed less to do. The talks were gated and required tickets (only £1 each, but to be honest none of them looked that interesting) - no cosplay parade, and way fewer booths. Still, the people who came out in dressed up sure did us proud still.

We had a (rather rotund) Schwarzenegger Terminator with battle damage to his face. His accent was good and he was happy to crack jokes with the crowd which was a pleaser.

Storm Troopers showed u in force (no pun intended) - six Troopers all proper kitted out, and their helmets had the neat voice changer that sounded like they were talking through a comm. It certainly whetted my appetite for my next outfit - though I'm not sure I'm tall enough to pull off a Storm Trooper, so perhaps a Mandalorian Bounty Hunter or something. I'll think about it.

Our outfits:

We chose Steampunk this year. I went as an aristocrat with a dark side; the swaggering cane had a dragon's head for a handle - looked wicked, and my coat had sweeping long tails down to my calves. Yo dressed as an airship pirate: Frilly blouse, black faux-leather boots, military style jacket, Nerf gun painted bronze and brass, goggles and tricorne just about did her look, and she was complimented on it by quite a few onlookers.

There were several Jack Sparrows swooning about, which of course naturally gravitated around her - telling her such jokes as "What's a pirates favourite letter?"

"R...?" She'd reply.

"You'd think so, wouldn't you. It's actually C."

She laughed, but it took her at least 15 minutes before she turned to me and said how silly she felt for only just getting the joke. Sigh.

Queen Concert!

Date: 27th February 2015
Location: Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield

We got to see the surviving members of Queen play a concert in Sheffield! Bryan May played an awesome guitar solo that when on forever, Roger Taylor did a drum-off against his son, and Yo cried when Bryan May sang a duet with a video of Freddie on the screen behind us.
